When is it time to stop learning?

When is it time to stop learning?

by Penelope Stephens

Gurus, experts, life-coaches… there’s so many people online trying to sell you “the dream.”

Some are scammers and some are telling the truth.

How to tell the difference?
Use common sense mostly.

If there is a 20 year old telling you they are a life coach.
They're obviously not, because realistically they have 2 years of life experience.

But forget about the scammers for now.
Let’s talk about the real experts selling you their advice and tools.

What they're telling you is the truth; their life experiences, tools, processes and systems are what got them to where they are.

But the ultimate truth in what they’re selling is that it’s their dream, not yours.

And realistically, you’re just procrastinating on your own dream.

Let me explain…

Experts and specialists have spent their lives building, learning and perfecting their craft and skill.

How?

Probably through a mix of learning; from more experienced experts, books, podcasts, tools, courses, guides… but also through life experiences.

These experts and specialists can give you the tools, advice and process for their expertise. But they can never give you that valuable life experience.

I call myself an expert at marketing and SME because I have spent over 15 years doing it.

I started my very first business at 14 years old.
Marketing, clients, finances, audience building all from scratch.

Since then I've worked with founders, start-ups and started four other businesses.

So as an expert in marketing, freelancing and SME, I can tell you what to do from what I've learnt.

Things like how to land clients, create leads and build an audience.
But I can't do it for you.

You need to apply that action.
You need to add your own experience and your own twist to it.

I can give you the tools to be able to follow my process of finding and taking care of clients, but I can’t run your business for you.

Eventually you need to put down the experts and actually just do the thing.

The crux of this piece isn’t to ignore experts.

You should listen to them to learn and expand on your skills.
But you should know when you’ve learnt enough.

Sometimes it’s time to stop with the external learning and tools, it’s time to just take action.

If you’re forever spending your time gathering information and planning, you’ll never take action.

Stop procrastinating on doing the thing.
Why not take the leap into what you’ve been learning about?

Don't become someone who watched everyone else live out their dreams while you didn't even try yours.

Love,
Penelope
