Everyone starts from nothing

Everyone starts from nothing

by Penelope Stephens

Welcome to Issue 100 of Boring Issues.

I can’t believe I have written 100 of these…

To commemorate, I took a trip down memory lane and checked out some past Boring Issues emails.

The very first Boring Issues subject was “It's 2024? Omg.” It was sent to 349 people, about 8 months after starting Boring Studios.

Now, it’s almost 2026 and this Issue is being sent to 12,670 people.

You probably already know this, but Boring Studios started with zero dollars, zero clients, zero business knowledge and zero following.

We sat on the couch building Boring Studios with laptops that had keys missing, smashed iPhones, tripods made of sticks, groceries on sale, no income, no takeout, no going out, no Netflix...

All we had was a vision (albeit blurry) but we made it work.

Now its almost 2026 and we've had our business for 2.5 years.

We've got a bit more clarity, confidence and momentum up our sleeves. But we never would have been here today without that day one, starting at zero.

Our business has changed so much in these 2 years.
I have changed.
Eden has changed.
I can bet that you, my reader, have changed too.

One thing that hasn't changed?

At the end of that Boring Issues 001, the email read:

“Boring would be nothing without our community. We are grateful for each of you reading this and for supporting us. Thank you <3”

And since day one, to today, and everyday that Boring Studios exists, that message still stands.

Whether this is the first Issue you've read, the 100th or somewhere in between, thank you for being here, reading my words and supporting our business that was once just a dream.

When I was a little girl, writing stories on my bedroom floor, I dreamed of just one person (who wasn’t my family) telling me that they enjoyed my writing.

Now over these past two years, I have collected 100s of messages from people who have felt my writing deeply.

And every time I get a message or an email from one of you, I know this matters. Like, not in a solving-world-hunger kind of matters. But enough to make you, just one person feel seen, understood and not alone in this world.

And that’s why I continue to write these with my whole heart.

I’m not crying… but I most definitely am tearing up.

So with the weight that I give this email publication, I really struggled with choosing a topic for this issue.

It should be a memorable 100th issue right?

Well, after I wrote 5 versions of the 100th Issue today, I decided it should be the opposite.

It’s just another email doing what I love and telling you that it's okay to be who you are. To make mistakes. To follow your dreams. To do everything, whether it is the first or the 100th time, with your heart.

Okay… now I’m crying.

Today’s issue is simple. You cannot get to the 100th without there first being 001.

Every flower must first be a seed.
Every cake but first be a recipe.
Every book must first be one word.
Everything starts at zero.

It’s December and that is the perfect time to plant your seeds for the new year.

Do just one thing:
One design.
One photograph.
One piece of content.
One gym workout.
One poem.

Do one thing for future you.
One thing that you would feel accomplished hitting 100 times.

And then realistically, time block that thing in weekly 😂 and keep doing it.

I'm not the best writer in the world. I write anyway and each time I write, I get better (I think).

So whatever you're telling yourself to not do the thing isn't real. Coming from me, a person who has told herself (and been told) of all the roadblocks stopping dreams.

Plant your seed despite it all.
Watch your seed grow.
Because if you never plant that seed, there is no flower to bloom.

If you never write issue 001, there will never be issue 100.

I’ll be here next week and every week after that to continue letting you know that we all have issues.

It’s been nice to share mine with you 100 times.

Thank you again.

Lots of love,
