The fastest way to ruin your business? Take a nap.

Do you feel like you're stuck - like the cogs aren't turning?
This week I’ve been chatting to a new friend.
She’s a creative business owner too and it’s so refreshing to be able to say:
“I feel like this” and she responds with “I completely understand you.”
I think that’s why these newsletters are so important to me.
I want you to be able to say:
“Hey, I’m not alone in feeling like this”
So when I was talking to this friend, we ended up on the topic of momentum: how much it matters, and how quickly it disappears if you stop moving.
And that conversation is the inspiration for this week’s Boring Issues.
So let’s get into it...
Momentum - without it you’re lost (me included).
For me (and maybe you), when I slow down I spiral. I overthink my life and I want to move to Jamaica to play in a drum circle.
I need to have big projects on at all times. I need to be working on something otherwise I lose momentum and get lost.
In business, it’s hard to find momentum - even 2-3 years into it, like Boring Studios.
And especially when you’re just starting out because you’re like;
- “Well, what do I even need to do?”
- “There’s no one here to tell me what I should be doing”
But momentum is what keeps you moving forward. It lets you:
- Fail quickly so you can collect your L’s early so you can stack W’s faster
- Stay visible because people can’t hire you if they forget you exist
- Decide faster because momentum kills overthinking
- And a million other benefits to “just keep swimming” in business.
When the cogs stop, they get rusty, so you have to keep going and adding oil.
Okay yeah cute Penelope, but how do you build momentum?
Like this.
- Have big projects or goals and break them into small, daily actions.
- Set clear, achievable goals because direction makes it easier to move fast.
- Stick to routines that build consistency - try, test and alter these as needed.
- Remove friction with things like easy to use Daily Planners and automate where you can like a Proposal template.
- Celebrate small wins to keep energy high - Eden and I still celebrate every sale we make.
- Surround yourself with like-minded people (peers - like us).
- Act before you overthink - motion > perfection.
- And honestly just… don’t… stop.
As long as you're doing something, you're getting momentum.
You're riding that bicycle without stopping. Doesn't matter if it's going the wrong way, you can just turn around later.
That’s momentum.
You finish something, start something else.
Now, don’t burn yourself out to the point of hating yourself.
Rest, recovery and spending time away from your projects is also very important. It will help your brain get back into the flow of your momentum. So make sure you’re taking time for your hobbies and looking after your brain and body.
Anyway, speaking of momentum, we are working on new products - yipee.
It’s been so much fun getting back into a big project like this and we can’t wait to share it with you.
