A content detox (sort of)

A content detox (sort of)

by Penelope Stephens

Does your brain feel like mush most of the time?

Same. Here's why and how to fix it.

So this week I've made it my mission to absorb more content.

But Penelope you’re constantly saying get off the Tok?

Yes, yes I am, and this is not the content I’m talking about.

Because that’s what social media content is… mostly slop.

Slop that coats your brain and eventually turns your mind into mush.

So I’ve actively been looking for newsletters, essays and audiobooks to fill my brain instead of the endless brain-rot, social media slop.

Even going to the cinema and reading magazines are a great way to get that “content fix”.

Because let’s be real, we still want a dopamine hit but maybe we can get it by taking in new experiences instead of watching a dance trend video?

Does absorbing more intellectual content make a difference?

It’s been 5 days and honestly I think it does.

What did I do?

  • Subscribed to newsletters on fashion, business, art and writing (reply if you want some recommendations)
  • Went to the cinema to see One Battle After Another (would love to discuss if anyone’s seen it)
  • Downloaded a new audiobook on making decisions quicker (something I struggle with)
  • And read more essays on Substack (yes I know this is still a social media but the content is much more substantial - mostly)

After these 5 days of less slop, more substance I’ve been able to…

  • Have conversations about new topics
  • Gain new perspectives on subjects I’ve never thought of
  • Feel less like my thoughts are recycled TikTok audio
  • Become less reactive, more reflective

Look, I’m not ready to remove social media from my life completely - and I may never be able to because it has its pros and I do enjoy it.

But I will try to incorporate less slop content into my life while adding more intellectual content.

Content isn’t going anywhere.

Content has been here since the dawn of time.

But instead of checking the daily news on a rock that’s been carved on the wall of the local Amphitheatre, we now have endless - and I truly mean endless - amounts of content that we are able to view.

Just be aware of what you’re consuming and how it makes you feel after consuming it.

TikTok is the deep fried, chocolate covered doughnut that can be enjoyed sometimes.

And we don't always feel so flash after an indulgent treat do we?

Intellectual, slower, substantial content is the nutrient rich foods that should be consumed more.

The kinds of foods that don't cause an afternoon slump or sugar crash.

Content feeds your brain just as much as your diet.

The point is: be aware of what you’re consuming and how it makes you feel afterwards.

Choose better options and feel the difference but remember you can have the slop sometimes, just not for every meal.
