Perfection Is the Enemy of Progress
by Penelope Stephens
Alright, so I'm in the pursuit of perfection and it's a terrible place to be.
Why?
Because when you pursue perfection, you don't land somewhere close.
You actually land in the opposite direction, and that is stuck.
Chasing perfection feels productive, but it’s just procrastination in disguise.
Overthinking, tweaking, restarting and convincing yourself you’re refining when really, you’re just avoiding.
Avoiding the risk of putting something out there that isn’t flawless.
And in that process, you get nowhere.
The truth is, the people who actually make progress aren’t the ones waiting for perfect.
They’re the ones taking messy action, figuring it out as they go.
So if you’re stuck, maybe it’s not because you’re not ready.
Maybe it’s because you’re waiting for something that doesn’t exist.
The perfect time? It's a false narrative that people tell you to keep you stuck. It doesn't exist.
You need to make that thing exist first, then you can "perfect" (improve) it.
Alright so how the f*ck do we fix this perfectionist procrastination?
Don't worry, I've done the research (procrastination) so you don't have to waste your time and keep avoiding doing the important things 😂
Aim for "Good Enough"
This is something I battle with EVERYDAY. It pains me to put out a piece of content where I have a blemish. It pains me to see a missed typo in an EDM I've just sent out. BUT no one cares as much as you do - they probably didn't even notice the "flaws" you see.
Set a Deadline (And Stick to It)
This is tricky. I know. We implemented this last week with our first course. We said it would be out by April 1st and even though we could have kept editing it and added this and that - we didn't, we got it out just like we said we would. And it's great, not perfect but great.
Adopt a ‘Test and Improve’ Mindset
Do you think Picasso stopped improving? Do you think Elon Musk's first business idea was a hit? No and no. You're allowed to be shit to begin with. That's called life. You grow and you improve. You want to know that you can always be better - not perfect, but better and the only way to do that is to DO IT.
Shrink the Task
If it feels too big, your brain resists. Tell yourself you’ll do just five minutes. Once you start, you’ll probably keep going.
Use the 2-Minute Rule
If a task takes less than two minutes, do it immediately. If it’s bigger, just start for two minutes. Momentum follows action.
Alright, and finally, something I'm going to implement daily is creating before I consume.
That means no scrolling when I wake up. Instead I will write or work on something - I will create.
...
My friend, you’re so focused on avoiding mistakes that you avoid progress instead.
The longer you chase perfection, the scarier it feels to put something out there.
Perfection is an illusion—no matter how close you get, the goalpost moves.
You think waiting for the right moment will make it better, but it just makes you later.
Ask yourself - what would you rather have? a finished project that’s 80% great or an unfinished one that’s still at 0%?
I know which one I'd be choosing.
The best work isn’t perfect - it’s done.
Now, I just have to remember this too 😂
