The story of where we found our new marketing strategy
by Penelope Stephens
Are you feeling overwhelmed, burnt out or on the verge of a breakdown?
Sometimes I wish I could scan my brain to give me a summary of my week in dot points.
Because sometimes it feels like I have nothing to remember and other times it feels like I’ve done so much that I can’t remember what I've done...
But there is one realisation that stood out in my memory this week.
Be patient because there is a back story first 😏
...
So right now we are doing a full re-haul of our marketing strategy.
We stopped posting content consistently for about a month, we turned off our Google ads and did no email marketing (other than Boring Issues ofc).
Oh and our website is a bit of a mess right now because we re-did it as a rush job before we went to Europe 😐
That’s not to mention our un-googlability by changing our website so much.
So… umm… yeah basically our marketing is a bit of a mess.
It has been overwhelming to say the least.
We felt guilty for travelling.
Burnt out. Fed up. Out of ideas.
Burnt out. Fed up. Out of ideas.
So where did we start on this HUGE task of rebooting our marketing?
Google Searching? Pinterest? Instagram? ChatGPT?
That's what you would assume.
That's what you would assume.
But instead, we discovered...
...
The outdoors.
The outdoors.
So we thought the answers to our new strategy would be behind a screen; researching and doing the work.
And yes, that is, of course part of creating a new marketing strategy.
But where did we REALLY find the answers?
We found the ideas by doing things that have nothing to do with business, marketing, branding or computers.
Things like... going to the park, late night strolls (Bangkok is very safe), baking, meeting new people, creating with our hands, sitting on a park bench with no plans for an hour, swimming, thrifting, drawing, painting…
Now we have some really cool, exciting and aligned ideas for what’s next.
And yes, now we have to make the strategy and do the work on the screens 😂
So that was my great discovery this week.
Your answers are not found where you think they are.
They are found when you have time to breathe.
Time to touch grass.
When you create a tangible object.
When you’re having dinner with friends.
When you’re playing.
When you’re not thinking about the thing.
Time to touch grass.
When you create a tangible object.
When you’re having dinner with friends.
When you’re playing.
When you’re not thinking about the thing.
Taking a break from work shouldn’t mean Netflix, gaming or being on your phone.
These are brain numbing activities and they help you disconnect from yourself and the world. This disconnect has its place in your life but be aware of what it is doing.
This is not downtime.
It’s not for inspiration.
It’s not play.
It’s not helping your brain truly have a break.
For your brain to be happy, it needs to grow.
It needs to do, see and feel new things. It needs to be understimulated.
And TV just ain't it.
So if you’re feeling burnt out, don’t reach for the remote.
Go outside.
I know it sounds cliche my friend, but truly all you need to do is go touch some grass 😂
Much love,
Penelope
