How to be a sell out

How to be a sell out

"But I'm a creative... not a content creator"

Let's chat personal brands and marketing... but first, let me tell you a quick story.

Long before Boring Studios, I worked in corporate Australia in marketing. I hated every second of it and quite literally threw up every morning on my way to this particular job 🤢

Going into this job, I was in my early 20s with fresh ideas on how we could market this brand to the next generation.

But alas, all my ideas were shut down by my manager with "You're too young" or "This is the way it's always been done". (Another sentence that makes me want to throw up 🤮)

In comes another business doing the exact same offering as the company I worked for, but the competition was getting the clients. Why? Because their marketing was better (and obviously made to suit the times).

...

The point of this story is the ego. When you have a big ego like many, many business owners, you don't listen to anyone else.

(Guys.. what's an ego? it's your sense of self-importance or self-worth.)

For creatives and business owners, our ego can be... maybe... a bit bigger than others.

We don't want to "sell out" and we don't want to fail. We have a bit more to "prove to everyone" because we didn't follow the traditional path.

At Boring, we often hear from designers and other creatives that they "don't want to sell out" or learn content creation because they think it's a bit "lame".

That's fine if you don't want to reach a large audience or scale - you do you, but you may end up like my manager - beaten by the competition.

For all creatives, social media is the key to reaching your target audience. It's not selling out. It's just the way of the world.

Social media is a pretty cool place to find like-minded people.

Treat it as your space to showcase your work - your own gallery if you will.

It’s not all TikTok dances and trends. Social media is also an art space.

You're not selling out and you're not throwing off your moral compass.

You're still a creative. Just a modern creative who's good at marketing and branding too.

...

Actionable points to take home if you want to grow your brand on social media;
  • Stop caring about what others think (your ego)
  • Plan your branding (what you’ll wear, how you’ll speak)
  • Plan your social media content
  • Listen to those who know more than you
  • Be yourself (or create a persona you like to play)
  • Have fun with it and don’t treat it like a chore
  • Prioritise your marketing (one day a week is enough)
  • Remember everyone starts at 0 - at the beginning.

No one is born a black belt, you have to learn the skills. Just like you will have to learn social media.

Just like we did with Boring.

PS. if you go back to our first videos, you'll see what I mean about starting with no skills 🤢

It took us 100 videos before we started to see growth. Then probably another 50 until we were proud of the content we were creating.

As always, reach out if you want advice or guidance. We are always happy to help.
