Finding the perfect time to start (spoiler, it's never)

Today’s Issue is one we hear about often, so I thought there was no better way to motivate our inspiring community than by sharing our origin story.
So maybe you’re thinking about starting – starting a business, starting to freelance, starting social media or starting anything.
Let me tell you a story about how Boring Studios started.
Let’s start at the very beginning in 199… wait not that early.
fades into dreamscape
It’s March of 2023 and Eden and I had been together for one year. We were both working management level jobs in agencies and looking after teams of creatives.
Hard work and great teams, but there was no flexibility. And frankly, we both hated being told what to do and having no freedom in our decisions at work or in life.
So after Eden and I discussed starting a business for months, we finally decided to quit our jobs.
Then we crossed our fingers and hoped for the best.
We had:
- No clients
- No equipment
- No social media following
- No email list
- No idea how to start, run or scale a business.
- And we had to find a place to live against 100s of other applications with just $10,000 saved (about 3 months of living).
Was it the perfect time to start?
No… but also yes.
We could have waited until:
- We had more savings;
- Had been together longer;
- Had a place to live;
- Had our first client;
- Or simply waited until we had any idea of what running a business actually looked like.
We could have waited for the “perfect” time.
But that’s the lie…
“I need this to start" -- an excuse we tell ourselves to avoid actually starting.
Okay wait… Well, don’t just quit your job if you have $0 in your bank account and have rent and bills to pay. Have some kind of savings before you totally quit please.
Back to the story…
Were we scared? Abso-fkn-lutely.
Did we make it out the other end? Also abso-fkn-lutely.
2026 will be our third year of business and:
- 56,842 people use our products.
- 120k+ people follow our story online.
- 30k+ people read our emails.
- If we waited, we might still be in those jobs that weren’t meant for us, still dreaming and waiting… Waiting forever until everything was “perfect”.
So maybe you’re waiting for:
- The new year (well it’s here);
- A nice flat to film in;
- More clients;
- More compliments on your work;
- More more more… perfection.
Well this blog is just to remind you that now is not the most perfect time to start, but neither is tomorrow.
There is no such thing as the “perfect time”.
There is only you and your choice to start.
Courage isn’t the absence of fear. It’s being scared and doing it anyway.
Start scared.
Start imperfect.
Start anyway.
We’re rooting for you.
Love,
Penelope
